Here is the Costume that Courtney designed herself with minimal help from me. She is a "Glaceon". One of the creatures from the realm of Pokemon!
Angel wanted to be a "Princess Ballerina in Pink". I don't know how she came up with the idea that she wanted to be a ballerina for Halloween. As far as I know she's never seen people perform Ballet. But she must have heard about it somewhere! Maybe from the Barbie movies she's seen?
Christopher makes a very good Mad Scientist! He even has on real safetly goggles and has test tubes in his lab coat pocket! :)
All Julianna really cared about was the candy. A little bit of sugar, and she was as happy as could be!
Dorathy got to be a white Unicorn with Pegasus wings, or as she likes to call it, a "Peggacorn".
Hurray, Mommy! I have Candy! Whenever I tried to put Julianna to bed this night, she kept on going to the door and saying "I'll be RIGHT back!" What she was trying to do was go out to the kitchen to grab just ONE more candy.
We have a tradition in our family that we eat a hearty bean stew before going Trick or Treating. The problem is, my kids don't like beans and would do anything to avoid the stew....So going to the Trunk or Treat was like giving my kids sugar for dinner -- YUCK.
I had very conflicting feelings regarding this Halloween. It was on a Sunday, and I wouldn't let my kids go door to door trick or treating. (Which made many of the neighbors sad and forlorn.) But we had a big Trunk or Treat at the Church the night before. I figured that was more candy than we wanted anyway. We missed Scott's work Halloween party because most of our kids were sick that weekend.
I didn't want to give out Halloween candy this year. Everything I've learned about Sugar compares it to a mind-altering drug...or a brain poison. Last year I gave out glow bracelets, but this year I didn't have any left. I didn't buy a single piece of candy all through the Halloween season. I ended up not giving anything out. I've decided that from now on, I'll give out clementines or cutie Oranges for my treat.
Our kids know the family rule: each kid gets a small handful of candy for his or her own, the rest goes into the "family pot" to be packed away for special occasions. I was going to throw it away, but now it's hidden in Scott's closet somewhere. I'm not sure what we're going to do with it, but I do know I don't want my kids eating it! Sugar depresses your immune system and makes you get sick!
Our kids were good sports about us confiscating all the candy. They've really been good natured about all the eating changes we've been going through. I'm very proud of them!
They mostly wanted to got to the party and dress up. The trunk or treat was so huge and crowded, I kept on loosing kids. When activities get that big, they just aren't fun anymore.
In the future, it's possible we'll give up trick or treating entirely. I'm debating. I could still host a Halloween party or two on our own. We might choose a traditional family activity instead: like going somewhere special or renting movies and playing games. Something to think about. I don't want to take away my kids fun memories and sweet treats, but I just can't stand to let them poison themselves, either.
