Bee Business

Posted by Picasa

Scott is working on starting up a new business:

BUNNY-BIRD APIARIES
(Bunnies because we raise and sell Rabbits, Birds because we have chickens, and Apiaries is, of course, for the bees)

Ever since My sister began keeping Bees, my husband Scott has been on FIRE! He LOVES bees. Scott has always been keenly interested in agricultural pursuits. His greatest dream is to own his own land and be 100% self-sufficient. Being a Bee-keeper fits in with his passions because bees not only produce honey for all your sweetening needs (and medicinal uses as well), but they also pollinate and are great to have around when you have a garden and orchard.

After a year of wishful thinking, he got starting in beekeeping last year. He had a total of 3 hives last year, and began experimenting with capturing swarms and doing hive extractions. Unfortunately, all three hives died over the winter and he had to start over this year.

He joined the Beekeepers Association of Oregon, and has started going to "Bee School" every fourth Monday at Chemeketa Community College. He has learned a lot between books, the Internet, and a community of Bee-keepers to consult.

This year he already has 5 hives. He gets calls almost everyday about swarms or extractions. So, Scott has decided to start a business. He has found a "niche".

In order to charge money for his services, he needs to purchase Limited Liability Insurance, and start a LLC (Bunny-Bird Apiaries, LLC.), then he'll be ready to go!

The Insurance is a bit pricey, and the business will be seasonal, but if we get it up and running, hopefully we'll still be able to make a profit. It will cost money to purchase and run a website, but in today's world you need to be in cyberspace to function. We might save that step for next year, though.

For those of you who are business owners, any advice, suggestions, and legal counsel will be welcome! This is new territory for us. Wish us luck!

  1. This may seem stupid, but my biggest advice to anyone starting a business, especially an offical LLC, is to have your taxes professionally done. I can't tell you how many times Mike ahs told me stories about people that have tried to do it themselves and end up getting in trouble or not getting all of their money back that they should. How exciting for you guys!
